TSA regional spokesman Mark J. Howell told Nexstar that airport auctions are not uncommon. However, it may vary depending on the airport and airline. Some items may be donated or discarded.

The same is true for items checked in at TSA checkpoints.

Items handed over at checkpoints (such as pocket knives) are recorded and retained by the TSA. After that, depending on the state, surplus institutions and free institutions will collect them. That agency or organization sends the item to the auction with funds that benefit the state agency selected by the state.

Still, Mr. Howell says TSA officials will give them the opportunity to dispose of the goods rather than surrender them. This means putting it back in the car, charging it to the airline, or returning it to the person who took you to the airport. Depending on the airport, you may also have the option to have the item mailed to you instead.

Exceptions are for illegal items such as ammunition, firearms and marijuana.

“If it’s illegal, we will report it to law enforcement,” Howell explains.
