Swanson home run, smiley sharp as Cubs beat Nationals, 5-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — Dansby Swanson hits a two-run homer, Drew Smiley hits a solid seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs bounce back from a rough series in Miami to take the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Monday night. Did.
Swanson went 5-for-3, including a double and his second home run of the season. Five 389-foot bursts to left-center made it 4-1. That’s a welcome advantage for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game skid. All of these losses to the Marlins were by 1 run.
Smiley (3-1) allowed a home run by Lane Thomas in the second inning, but threw just 84 pitches from there. The left-hander gave up six hits in five consecutive starts, allowing no more than two runs.
Mackenzie Gore (3-2) allowed a season-high four runs over four innings on seven hits. Seiya Suzuki hit his RBI single in Chicago’s first and Trey his Mancini doubled on Suzuki.
Ian Happ hit a home run in the ninth for Chicago off Cory Abbott.
Dominic Smith had three of Washington’s six hits. The Nationals are last in the National League East, losing 5-4.
