Police chief: 4 officers involved in deadly police-involved shooting in Illinois
PEORIA, Illinois (WMBD) — Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarría has released more information about Monday’s fatal police-involved shooting.
At a press conference, Echevarria said four Peoria police officers were involved in the shooting that killed 59-year-old Samuel V. Richmond.
Officers were responding to shot-spotters near 800 blocks on McBean Street around 10:11 p.m. when they spotted Richmond armed with a gun.
Echevarria said Richmond placed officers in life-threatening situations where he had to use lethal force. Four separate Peoria police officers fired firearms
In accordance with Department policies and procedures, all four officers have been placed on leave of absence.
“Our officers are very dedicated to saving lives, but unfortunately, sometimes we are forced into deadly encounters. Last night was a clear example of that.” Our deepest condolences to the family, and the Peoria Police Department is committed to providing an open and transparent investigation.”
The incident is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
Also on Tuesday, friends and family gathered at Martin Luther King Jr. Park to mourn Richmond’s death.
“He is over 50 and has never had trouble with the police. You know what I’m saying? Hey, this is something that needs transparency, we want transparency, we want answers,” said Ryan, a friend of the victim. Beck said.
The names of the officers have not been released.
