The man died on Friday, hours after being held at the Lake County Jail, officials reported.
A statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the 51-year-old man, who has not been identified, was found unresponsive while lying in his cell bed around 8:30 p.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man “appeared fine” during a routine check-up about 30 minutes before corrections officers ruled him unresponsive.
The sheriff’s office said he was pronounced dead after prison guards, prison medical staff and Waukegan paramedics performed CPR and other life-saving measures.
Authorities do not suspect foul play in the man’s death. The sheriff’s office said he was alone in his cell and had “a number of underlying medical conditions.”
He was jailed shortly after midnight on Friday after being arrested in Barrington for violating a protection order, officials said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Serious Crimes Task Force is investigating.
