Lawsuit aims to stop immigrants from entering Chicago’s old high school

CHICAGO — The group South Shore Neighbors filed a lawsuit on Thursday seeking a temporary injunction to stop the city of Chicago from moving immigrants to the former South Shore High School.

The city announced last week that it wanted to turn the old school into a recreational area.

Hundreds of residents attended a city-led community forum last week, where presentations by members of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration were interrupted by outbursts of anger.

Community attorneys believe that the city and Chicago Public Schools would be in breach of the tenancy agreement if they proceeded with the plan.

“A rental agreement is a contract, a legal document, and it deviates from the terms of a legal document,” said Frank Avila. “Second, it’s a zoning issue. It’s not zoned for housing.”

Between 250 and 500 immigrants will be housed at South Shore High School, which will be staffed by the Chicago Police Department 24 hours a day, according to the city.

“Why not Pilsen, Belmont Kuragin, Logan Square, Little Village or Hedwich? A community with a supportive cultural base,” said South Shore resident Jimmy Darnell Jones.

The city said it needed to identify more resting places to bail out police stations, which currently house about 500 migrants.

With Title 42 expiring, Chicago is gearing up for a massive influx, with hundreds more expected in the coming weeks.

“As Latinos, we feel like we really care about our families. I think it’s important that the community comes together,” said Gina Gomez.

About 70 migrants are staying in a new shelter that has just opened in an empty warehouse in Pilsen.

Juan Aguirre of the National Laboratory teamed up with Aldo. Ray Lopez and others asked that these people be offered a place to stay instead of sleeping in Police District 12.

“This is not about immigration, it’s about the whole city of Chicago ignoring our community,” Natasha said. “This school belongs to us.”

On the South Shore, residents said they wanted the school, which until recently was used as a police academy, to become a community or youth center.

WGN News reached out to the mayor’s office and CPS for comment to see if the plan is still being considered. I am still waiting for a reply.
