Six people were killed and one injured in a Monday attack on a kindergarten in southern China’s Guangdong province, a city government spokesman said.
“Victims include a teacher, two parents and three students,” she said.
It did not provide details such as the identities and ages of the victims in Lianjiang or the weapons used in the attack.
According to Reuters, media reports said the attack was a stabbing.
“One suspect has been arrested,” he said, adding that a police investigation was ongoing.
A statement from local police said the suspect was a 25-year-old man surnamed Wu.
The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. local time (6:40 p.m. EDT on Sunday), state-run China News Network reported.
Videos taken by passers-by claiming to show the crime scene have been removed from video-sharing platforms Douyin and Twitter-like Weibo.
Guns are tightly controlled, but China has been plagued by a spate of mass stabbings.
Violent crime has increased in recent decades as economic growth and the rapidly widening gap between rich and poor.
In recent years, deadly attacks targeting students and schools have occurred nationwide.
The attack forced authorities to step up security and sparked calls for more research into the root causes of such violence.

In the same year, a “school-related criminal case” occurred in central Hubei province, killing eight children, injuring two others, and arresting a 40-year-old man.
And in April 2018, a 28-year-old man killed nine college students and injured 12 outside a school in northern Shaanxi province.
The attacker later said he acted out of revenge for being harassed by a student at the same school.
