ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A father has been charged after his 6-year-old son accidentally shot himself with an unattended gun in Winnebago County, officials said.
Elios Lopez, 26, was charged Tuesday in an incident that occurred Nov. 20, according to the Winnebago County State Attorney’s Office.
Authorities said Lopez left a loaded .45 pistol in the living room while he was asleep. The next morning, authorities found a six-year-old boy with a gun, started playing with it when it rang, and killed him.
Lopez has been charged with endangering the life of a child.
If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Lopez is currently being held at the Winnebago County Jail without bail.
