Calumet City, IL (WLS) — Police chased at least three suspects into a mall in the southern suburbs Tuesday afternoon after a chase that appears to have begun in Chicago.
The Chopper 7HD appeared at Calumet City’s River Oaks Center Mall. A large number of police vehicles surrounded the shopping mall.
Chopper 7HD’s cameras were rolling when the police chase first started in the city. Chicago Police pursued the vehicle on the Dan Ryan Freeway before it passed South Side Street.
The vehicle was then seen entering the southbound lane of the Bishop Ford Freeway. His SkyMap7 speedometer at ABC7 showed the vehicle’s measured speed to be up to 160 miles per hour.
The driver eventually stopped at the River Oaks Mall. At that time, three people got out of the car and ran into the southwest entrance of the mall. Officers followed them into the building, which was not evacuated.
Mall employees said police were patrolling stores looking for suspects.
“They started swarming there, and as we were looking, they came into each store and said, ‘Are there two guys in hoodies?’ It’s like,'” Big Time owner Robin Heywood Corazo said.
Later, the vehicle was seen being towed before 6:00 p.m.
Calumet Police said the vehicle was wanted in connection with incidents in multiple jurisdictions, but did not provide further details. As of 10 p.m., no one has been detained.
Initially the Chicago Police Department was in charge, but the Calumet Police Department is now in charge of the investigation.
