The human remains found by hunters have been identified as Phillip Rampey, who has been missing in North Carolina for more than three years, officials said.
region the hunter tripped over the corpse December 22, in a wooded area just three miles (3 miles) from Lumpy’s home in Greenville. The lawmaker conducted his two searches for the corpse dog, on December 22nd and his January 3rd. According to a Jan. 6 release from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, the remains were recovered and transferred to the coroner’s office, where a positive identification was conducted.
Rampey, 44, was first reported missing from his home on Dec. 6, 2019, officials said, and a statewide Silver Alert was issued.
The sheriff’s office said Lumpy was known to spend time in the woods in his area, and a search of the surrounding woodlands was conducted in the weeks and months after his disappearance. Received multiple reports of sightings of Rampey, who were “fully investigated, but he was never found.”
Lawmakers found no evidence of wrongdoing, according to the release.
“Sheriff Paula Dance and the Pitt County Sheriff’s Department extend our deepest condolences to the Lumpy family,” the sheriff’s office said.
