At least 20 dead as boat capsizes in southern India WGN Radio 720
NEW DELHI (AP) — More than 20 people, including children, died after a boat carrying more than 30 people capsized on a beach in southern India on Sunday night, local media reported.
Sports Minister Abdullahiman told the Press Trust of India news agency that “the boat has been pulled ashore and it is expected that more bodies will be recovered from inside”, leaving four people in critical condition. It added that a person was admitted to the hospital.
The dead included children who came to board the boat during school holidays, the minister said.
It is not clear what caused the boat to capsize near Tubaltheeram Beach in the coastal town of Tanur in the Malappuram district of Kerala.
The state premier, who will be visiting the area on Monday, tweeted his condolences to the families of the victims and urged the district’s authorities to oversee the rescue.
The PTI reported that Monday had been declared an official day of mourning, citing a government statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that he was “heartbroken for the loss of life” and announced compensation for the families of the victims.
