ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — This moose has stepped into a medical facility…
It might be preparation for a bad joke, but it actually happened in Anchorage on Thursday.
A young elk found green vegetation in the lobby of the Medical Building at Providence Alaska Health Park, roamed the snow and decided to stop for greenery.
An ingenious or lucky moose triggered a sensor in the automatic door of the building that houses the hospital’s cancer center and other clinics, said Randy Hughes, the hospital’s security director.
“One of our tenants called and said a moose had invaded the building,” says Hughes.
Hughes believes it’s the same elk that hangs around campus.
“But it looked like a magnet for people to come see it,” he said. “It’s rare for a moose to enter a building, so everyone was excited to take pictures and so on.”
In one video posted on social media, a woman wearing a mask and scrubs was heard walking by a moose and snapping pictures with her cell phone while saying, “That’s crazy.” .
The moose was so engrossed in eating the office plants that he didn’t realize the ruckus he was causing.
The guards formed a semicircle to corral the elk and drive it out the door. One of the officers grabbed a piece of plant the moose was eating and tried to lure it away.
“Finally, I think it was enough to look at him and see him eat,” Hughes said.
The elk walked away from the building, but after a short stroll on the building’s semi-circular drive, headed to the other side of the building and slept for the afternoon.
This isn’t the first time a moose has broken into one of the hospital complex’s buildings, and bears have tried to enter the emergency room before.
“There’s never a dull moment at the hospital here,” Hughes said.
