3 charges pending after police shot carjacking suspect

Chicago (CBS) Charges were pending after off-duty Chicago police officers exchanged gunfire with a group of suspected carjackers around Calumet Heights on Friday night.

The incident occurred on Thursday at 6:04 pm at 88th Street and Constance Avenue.

Out of nowhere, another car pulled up while the cops were taking something out of the white Tesla. At least three men with guns were inside.

One of the carjackers jumped out and pointed a gun at the woman. But he didn’t realize she was packing her. More importantly, he didn’t realize he was attempting a robbery from an off-duty police officer.

A quick exchange of fire filled the block as the officers drew their weapons. A total of 13 to 14 shots were fired.

Several of the bullets shattered the rear side window of the officer’s Tesla, but at least one of the bullets hit the attempted carjacker.

The injured carjacker ran away, and those who remained in the car drove off. Some time later, someone with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound was dropped off at the Advocate’s Trinity Hospital. He is a popular person now.

A source told CBS 2 on Friday that a person who showed up to the hospital left his shoes at the scene and showed up for treatment without shoes.

The off-duty officer was not injured.

We also learned that on Friday, the vehicle parked by the suspect was reported stolen in Countryside.

The Citizens Police Accountability Office is investigating because an officer shot someone. If you have information, call COPA at (312) 746-3609 or ChicagoCOPA.org.
