You Can’t Pour From An Empty Cup: 4 Tips to Practice Self-Care As a Busy Mother

A Princeton University Press study conducted a study and evaluated that mothers are still the default parents, even amid the COVID pandemic. They are planning activities for the children to do on weekends, shuttling them to extracurricular activities throughout the school week, planning and cooking meals for them, and caring for the unexpected boo-boos among more of a laundry list of duties.

1. Get a Shower Right As the Kids Go to Bed

Especially as a new mother to an infant or raising toddlers, they can surely keep you on your toes. Focusing solely on your children and their needs and teaching them moralistic values is the hallmark of motherhood.

Right as the little ones get in bed, hop in the shower and give yourself at least 10-15 minutes of self-care. It can be hard to get a shower during the day when the children are awake, so it can be best done while they are first asleep with less chance of them waking up during that time.

2. Have a 5-Minute Breathing Session

When you wake up in the morning (escape to the bathroom or another room if you have to after making sure the kids are safe), take five minutes for yourself. Close your eyes and inhale and exhale slowly. Imagine you achieving your goals for the day. Envision the strength you will feel when you tackle your to-do list even while raging little dinosaurs pitter-pattering around your home.

3. Take Up a New Hobby

Ok, yes, we know it can be hard to attain a hobby while taking care of little ones. Even if it is trying a new game on your smartphone, take some downtime in between caring for your little ones.

As long as the hobby is age-appropriate, you can get your kids in on the hobby as well. They can learn more about what mommy likes while learning something new as well. For example, if it’s a trading card game, which attracts players of all ages, it can turn into a family thing where you are doing what you love while also spending time with your little ones.

4. Get At Least One Night To Yourself Every So Often

Getting one night to yourself can be challenging if it is difficult to find a babysitter. However, once you can arrange for child care, try to get a night to yourself on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis whereas a trusted loved one watches the children while you relax and do the things that you love most.

Don’t forget that you cannot pour from an empty cup as a parent. Remember to recharge yourself a little time each day so that you can be more revitalized to tackle the many parenting duties daily.
