A small plane crashed on Long Island, New York on Sunday, killing one person and seriously injuring two more, police said.The tourist plane crashed around 3 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a single-engine Piper PA 28 crashed on approach to Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York.

“Air traffic controllers at Republic Airport received a Mayday call from a small privately owned aircraft. The pilot was reporting smoke in the cockpit,” said John Rowan of Suffolk County Police. Chief of Police said. CBS New York.

Rowan said the plane had been in the air for “a while” and the plane crashed on a “final approach attempt” as it was returning to Republic Airport.

The plane crash-landed about 300 feet off the Long Island Railroad tracks in North Lindenhurst, CBS New York reported.

The two injured crew members were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where there was no update on their condition as of Sunday night, CBS New York reported.

The deceased was not immediately identified, and it was not clear whether he was the pilot of the plane or a passenger.

No injuries have been reported, according to CBS New York.
