The White Sox beat the Padres, 3-1.The magic number remains 3

San Diego (AP) — Eloy Jimenez hit a homer and the Chicago White Sox pounced on San Diego ace Yu Darvish to win 3-1 on Friday night and delay the Padres’ playoff berth.

Darvish was postponed a day to rest in anticipation of pitching in the NL Wildcard round, but the Padres lost their third straight game. Milwaukee’s win over Miami kept their magic number at 3, earning them a wild card spot.

The Padres’ second wild card lead over Philadelphia was shortened to 1 and 1/2 games, just two games ahead of the Brewers with five games remaining.

The Padres recorded 15 strikeouts.

The White Sox were ruled out of the playoff chase a year after winning the AL Central, but won their second straight day after losing eight straight.

Darvish (16-8), who was aiming for a career-best 17 wins, ended his streak of six starts. He allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 6 strikeouts and 1 walk in 6 innings.

Darvish allowed consecutive singles to start second before retiring the side.

He was not so lucky in the fourth when he allowed three hits in an inning for the first time in six starts for the White Sox to take the lead. Jimenez hit his 16th leadoff home run to the left. Gavin Sheets doubled for him in center and scored the go-ahead run on Yoán Moncada’s single to right.

The White Sox went 3-1 in the sixth when Moncada hit a one-out double to right and scored on Andrew Vaughan’s single.

White Sox rookie Davis Martin (3-5) held San Diego to 1 run, 6 hits, a career-high eight strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Liam Hendricks pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 35th save.

San Diego’s Brandon Drury was taken down with one out in the fourth inning when a ball from Martin hit the beak of his helmet. Drury was checked by his trainer and remained in the game.

Drury was placed on the 7-day concussion list on Sept. 5 after hitting the face flap of his helmet with a pitch from Dustin May of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 2.

Drury doubled with one out in the second and scored on Josh Bell’s single.
