Newborn baby found abandoned near Mobile Home Park in Florida

Mulberry, Florida (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office found a newborn baby abandoned in the small hills of Mulberry, Florida early Saturday morning.

Agents found the baby near the Legal Loop Mobile Home Park around 1:47 a.m. after someone said they heard the baby crying outside.

The baby was wrapped in a blanket with the placenta still attached to his body, according to the sheriff’s office.

Polk County Fire and Rescue medical personnel said they believed the girl was born about an hour before agents discovered her, based on her temperature.

Rescuers took the newborn to a local hospital, where he is said to be in good health.

The sheriff’s office said it deployed K-9 units, air force, drones and Bloodhounds to locate the child’s mother, but they have yet to locate her.

“It was by the grace of God that we found an abandoned baby girl before she was exposed to cold and animals,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. But she’s a strong girl and seems to be doing well.”

Florida mothers can safely let go of their newborns without fear of prosecution, thanks to the Saven Haven Law of 2000. Parents can leave their unharmed baby in a safe haven, usually a hospital, her EMS or fire station, which is appropriately staffed.

If anyone knows where the child’s mother is, call the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 863-298-6200.
