Man charged with murder in PCH stabbing OC doctor on bicycle | WGN Radio 720

(KTLA) — A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly punching and stabbing an emergency room doctor to death as he was riding a bicycle along the Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point earlier this week.

The incident occurred around 3:00 pm Wednesday at the intersection of PCH and Crown Valley Parkway.

Long Beach’s Van Roy Smith allegedly crashed his white Lexus into the back of Michael Mammon’s bike.

After the crash, Smith got out of the car and allegedly stabbed 58-year-old Mamone several times when a witness tried to help an injured man.

Smith was detained by witnesses at the scene until law enforcement arrived.

Mamone, who worked as an emergency physician at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, died in hospital.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Smith was charged with murder with the special enhancement of using a deadly weapon, a knife, during the crime.

He pleaded not guilty in court on Friday and is scheduled to appear in court on February 16. He is being held on his $1 million bail.

Smith faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and one year if convicted.

The two did not know each other, and the motive for the crime is unknown.
