Loop shooting, two injured in carjacking at Mexican Independence Day celebrations

Two men were injured in separate shootings and carjackings were reported on DuSable Lake Shore Drive early Saturday morning as thousands traveled downtown for Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations.

A video posted to social media chronicles another chaotic night on the loop. Muscle car drivers drifted through congested intersections, people climbed on top of cars, set off fireworks, and some threw objects at overwhelmed police officers.

The shooting occurred almost simultaneously at various corners of the loop.

A 32-year-old man got into a fight with another man on the 100th block of South Wacker Drive around 1 a.m. when someone in a red sedan stopped and opened fire, according to Chicago police.

A 32-year-old man was shot in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was walking on a 100-block sidewalk in East Wacker, about a mile away, when a group of people approached him and began beating him, police said. Someone in the group then pulled out a gun and shot him.

Police said he had a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to Northwestern in good condition.

No one was taken into custody in either attack.

Residents celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day early Saturday on the Loop.

Videos posted on social media showed traffic at least temporarily stopped on DuSable Lake Shore Drive as castaways spun their wheels near Soldier Field and the Museum Campus.

According to police, the 1400 South block of the drive was where a carjacking was reported around 3:15 a.m. in downtown revelry.

Police say someone forced five people out of the Nissan Rogue and took necklaces from two passengers.

Officials said the carjackers had driven south in a Nissan vehicle and were driving on Dusable Lake Shore Drive. His license plate number is DD47882.

No injuries have been reported.
