Cold weather in the city and a big warm-up following a ‘white’ Christmas

Chicagoans celebrated their first “white” Christmas since Sunday in 2017, but it was also the coldest since 1996. Temperatures will moderate over the next week as the city emerges from the recent snow and cold weather. A fast-moving “clipper” system will bring light snow to the area early Monday. Snowfall should normally be an inch or less, but very cold road surfaces can become slippery as the snow falls. Mercury will rise below freezing for the first time since December 22nd, and temperatures will rise to near 50 degrees Celsius, so the mild weather will continue through the end of the year. An approaching storm system will produce periods of rain, and calm, moist air will be cooled by cold ground to create low clouds, fog and drizzle, ensuring a damp and disastrous end to 2022.
