Houston (AP) — The band announced Wednesday that ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, one of the bearded figures of the Texas blues rock trio, died at his home in Houston. He was 72 years old.

In a Facebook post, guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard said he died while Hill was asleep. They didn’t reveal the cause of death, but a July 21st post on the band’s website said Hill “has made a short detour back to Texas to address the hip problem.”

Born in Dallas, Joe Michael Hill formed ZZ Top in Houston in 1969. The band released their first album in 1970 entitled “ZZ Top’s First Album”. The band’s 1976 “Worldwide Texas Tour” on stage in the iconic Texas shape, adorned with cacti, snakes and longhorn cows, was one of the most successful rock tours of the decade.
