Yanks’ Anthony Rizzo home run debuts over the Marlins

Anthony Rizzo hit a 449-foot home run in the New York Yankees debut and beat host Miami Marlins 3-1 on Friday night.

Jameson Taillon (7-4) won by throwing a scoreless inning on 52/3. Aroldis Chapman threw a scoreless ninth to win the 21st save with 25 chances.

Rizzo, which was acquired in a deal with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, won a walk 2-3.

Former Texas Rangers star Joey Gallo also made his Yankees debut and took a 0-4 walk. He was used in the right fielder after being acquired on Thursday.

Former Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton (usually DH) played left fielder and played 0-3. It was the first time he played in the outfield since 2019.

Rookie Zack Thompson (2-4) struggled and allowed Rizzo’s six solo home runs in the 52/3 innings. He hit 5, walked 4, and gave up only three hits.

Marlins second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who missed nine games due to a bony bruise on his left shoulder, returned and scored a run 2-4.

In addition, two Marlins outfielders made their major league debut. Right fielder Brian Delacruz was 0-4. Left fielder Bryan Miller was 1 to 3. Delacruz also made excellent runs and backhand catches on the warning track, robbing Gary Sanchez of additional bass and RBI potential in the fourth inning.

Miami threatened sixth. Before the Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres threw the ball at second-base Rougned Odor to finish the inning, De La Cruz had a chance for an RBI single with two outs in the first and second innings.

Torres was sent off in the next inning because he claimed to be Strike 3.

New York extended the lead to 3-0 in 8th place and finally joined Rizzo’s home run. After loading the base with one out, Odor shattered a two-run single to the right.

Miami boarded the board at number eight and placed the runners in the corners with no outs in the Chisholm and Jesús Aguilar singles. Chisholm scored with Brian Anderson’s double play grounder and effectively killed Miami’s final rally.
