The Boston (AP) Yankees brought a lucky charm to Fenway Park. This was a former shortstop, meaning Kryptonite in Boston.
Bucky Dent, a 1978 American League East tiebreaker who sent New York over his rival Red Sox on a famous home run away from Mike Torrez, to take part in the AL Wild Card game on Tuesday night. Traveled from my home in Florida.
Dent’s drive against the Green Monster 43 years ago rocked the only other one-game winner match between teams. This time, the Yankees relied solely on his presence against the Tampa Bay Rays to help push them into the AL Division Series.
His seat? Just behind the home plate, considering the Red Sox pitcher who took the mound.
“That’s amazing,” Dent said in an ESPN broadcast interview.
Dent said he was asked a couple of times a day about his memorable home run. Not only did it surprise the Yankees’ longtime rivals, but it ultimately helped his team win the World Series title for the second year in a row.
“It was special,” he said.
New York manager Aaron Boone knows he’s eliminated the Red Sox on a big stage when he hit 11 goodbye home runs in Round 7 of the 2003 AL Championship Series at Yankee Stadium. ..
Since then, a two-run comparison has followed Boone, who said it was “cool” to know a little about dents over the years.
“Such a good guy,” Boone said before the match. “And for me, who grew up in games and was a fan of games, I knew who Bucky Dent was playing in the 70’s and 80’s, so yeah, that’s a cool connection.”
Maybe someone else will take some time. Maybe for a “striper”.
Dent just laughed when asked what kind of reception he was receiving when he returned to Boston.
“They don’t know I’m here yet,” he said.
