WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Wednesday accused North Korea of smuggling a “substantial number” of artillery shells to Russia to support its invasion of Ukraine.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States believes North Korea is “trying to make it appear as if it is being sent to a country in the Middle East or North Africa.” He declined to provide a specific estimate for the amount of ammunition that would be sent to bolster Russia’s efforts.

Kirby said North Korea was “secretly supplying” ammunition to Russia, but “we are still monitoring this to determine if the shipment was actually received.” .

Kirby argued that North Korean supplies were “not going to turn the tide of the war,” citing Western efforts to resupply Ukrainian forces.

The White House did not specify the shipping method or whether the United States or other countries would try to block shipments to Russia.
