Minneapolis (AP) — Kim PotterMinnesota police officer killed after mistaking gun for taser Dante Wright In 2021, I was released from prison early Monday morning.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections said Potter was released around 4 a.m. The ministry confirmed on Friday that she would be released on Monday, but did not say when she would be released, citing security concerns.

Potter, a white police officer at the Brooklyn Center Police Department outside Minneapolis, shot and killed a black man, Wright, during a traffic stop in April 2021. Derek Chauvinthe cop who killed George Floydand Wright’s death sparked several days of protests.

Potter, now 50, appeared much leaner in new photos released last week by the Department of Corrections. Her attorney, Earl Gray, said she had “no idea” why her appearance had changed.

Potter was released from the Minnesota Correctional Institution Shakopee and will be released under supervision until December 21, when his two-year sentence for manslaughter expires. Andny Skoogman, a spokesman for the correction, said in his news release that Potter will live in Wisconsin during the supervised release.

Minnesota law requires those sent to prison to serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison and be released under supervision for the rest of the time, Skoogman said. For Potter, she served 16 months of her two-year sentence.

“The length of imprisonment is set by law. There are no parole boards and no time off for good behavior,” Skogman said.

Sentence From Justice Regina Chu Strong criticism came from the Wright family and their attorney, civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The state attorney general’s office was seeking her sentence of just over seven years in prison, as recommended by state guidelines.

At the sentencing hearing, defense attorneys argued that Potter deserved leniency because Wright was trying to get rid of him and Potter had the right to defend himself. He said it wasn’t the same as other high-profile murders, including the death of George Floyd, who was sentenced to 22-and-a-half years in .

“This is a cop who made a tragic mistake,” she said.

Wright, the father of 20, was killed on April 11, 2021 after Brooklyn Center cops stopped him for having an expired license tag and air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror. I was. Officers discovered he had a warrant for misdemeanor weapon possession charges and was shot during the struggle as officers tried to arrest him.

Civil rights advocates say laws banning things from hanging in rear-view mirrors have been used as an excuse to stop black people from driving.

In the video, as Wright attempted to drive away from the stop, Potter could be heard yelling “Taser” several times, just before firing his pistol.

Potter, a 26-year police veteran, apologized to Wright’s family at the sentencing, speaking directly to his mother. I’m sorry for breaking your heart…my heart is broken and devastated for all of you.
