Mt Carmel shooting near me: 2 teens wounded in Woodlawn, Chicago shooting near Mount Carmel High School football game, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police said two teens were injured, one of them critically, in a Friday evening shooting near Mount Carmel High School.

The gunfire erupted in Woodlawn without warning, just moments after a football game ended at the school.

Rosiland Martin said it was a chaotic scene as she picked up her niece from the neighborhood just minutes after gunshots rang out, leaving a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year old girl wounded.

“She was hysterical,” Martin said. “She said that they had been a shooting, and just to meet them on the corner, because people were everywhere and trying to get away from the shots that were fired.”

The shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. Officers responded to the 1500 block of East 64th Street to find two teenagers who had been wounded by gunfire.

“We were in the back, back there, waiting for my son to come out,” said Darion Williams, the parent of a Mount Carmel High School football player.

Authorities said a teen boy was hit in his stomach and rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition. The teen girl, shot in her foot, was taken to the same hospital in good condition.

“A bunch of people started running and yelling, and then, they said they were shooting, but I never heard the gunshots or anything,” Williams said.

The Mount Carmel Caravan, 2022 state champions, had just secured a 22 to 12 victory over Chicago Public Schools’ Morgan Park Mustangs when the shots rang out.

CPS emailed a statement, saying, “The entire Chicago Public Schools family wishes the victims of this incident a speedy and full recovery. Our thoughts are with these young people, their families, and all those impacted by this incident.”

In a separate statement, Brendan Conroy, the president of Mount Carmel High School, said the two victims were not Mount Carmel High School students.

“Today, we pray for the full recovery of the two young visitors to our campus who were injured last night, and tomorrow we continue our efforts to make Chicago a better place to live and grow up as a young man,” the statement from Conroy read.

No one is in custody and no arrests have been made in the Friday night shooting as detectives continue to investigate.
