Leylah Fernandez, runner-up at the Toronto (AP) US Open, will not join the Canadian team in the Billie Jean King Cup final next month.
Tennis Canada has confirmed that Fernandez will withdraw from the team’s roster in the November 1-6 match in Prague and will be replaced by Carol Jao.
Other members of the country’s team are Rebecca Marino, Gabriela Dabrowski and Francoise Avanda.
Canada will play the 2019 champions France and Russia in the finals. The 2020 edition of the event has been canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.
19-year-old Fernandez performed a groundbreaking performance at the US Open, losing to another unseeded teenager, Emara Ducanu, after reaching the finals.
After defeating defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round, Fernandez arrived at Flushing Meadows in 73rd place, leaving him at 28th place, the highest in his career. This was followed by 2016 champions Angelique Kerber and top five seeds Elina Svitolina and Arina Savitolina.
Fernandez was eliminated in singles and doubles from a hard court tournament in Indian Wells, California on Tuesday.
