United Center Mass COVID Vaccination Site Closed Thursday – NBC Chicago

The United Center’s high-volume COVID vaccination has ended this week, with the final day scheduled for Thursday, according to Chicago’s chief health official.

Chicago Public Health Secretary Dr. Allison Arwady and CDPH Deputy Secretary Christopher Shields announced the closure during a live Facebook broadcast Tuesday morning.

“This is the last week of the United Center,” Arwady said in a discussion about the city’s overall readiness and response to the coronavirus pandemic, including efforts to launch a UC mass vaccination site. ..

“This Thursday, the United Center will give the final vaccination on the 24th and then return the accommodation,” Shield replied.

“Once again, I can’t thank the United Center enough, and I can’t thank all the partners in this truly central location,” said Arwady. It represents the location of the “dispensing point” for administering the vaccine.

Arwady and Shields said Tuesday that the United Center site, which opened on March 9, has given more than 301,000 vaccines.

City health officials emphasized the accessibility factor of the site, which stated that the site was successful, and said the site takes into account feedback for drive-through options and accessibility for people with disabilities and onsite translators. ..

Approximately 62,000 of the vaccine doses given are for people who have used translators, which is one-fifth of vaccination.

Arwady said Chicago is moving away from larger fixed population vaccination sites in a strategy that favors a more “hyperlocal” approach to unvaccinated populations.

But she says: “You can get a free vaccine from the United Center. We have Pfizer and J & J. The last day of the drive-through is Thursday. Of course, if you get your first vaccination, send you somewhere for your second vaccination. is needed.

“It will be available on Malcolm X or you can get it yourself,” she added, calling UC a “huge part” of the city’s vaccination strategy.

The United Center mass vaccination site opened on March 9 under the Federal Pilot Program and is operated by a coalition of federal, state, and local officials.

Initially planned to be open for 8 weeks, it will remain open for more than 15 weeks before the site is closed.

The site operates seven days a week and was capable of delivering 6,000 shots per day at full capacity at an initial dose provided by the federal government separate from the Illinois vaccine allocation.
