Illinois teenager dies in sledding accident on Copper Mountain

Summit County, Colorado (KDVR) — Two teenagers on their spring break vacation died Sunday after a sled accident at a Colorado ski resort, officials said.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a reported sledging accident around 8:35 p.m. Copper Mountain Ski Resort Male, 17 and 18, from Illinois.

They reportedly tandem down the halfpipe and took off from a large snowman at the bottom of the halfpipe. According to the Sheriff’s Office, they fell hard onto the ice below and suffered blunt force trauma.

The teenager was immediately sought medical attention, but was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead.

Summit County Sheriff Jaime Fitzsimons said, “We extend our thoughts and condolences to the families and friends of the individuals involved in this tragic incident.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said it wanted to remind everyone to always practice safe snow play habits and be aware of the risks associated with these activities.

There is a list of rules under the Copper Mountain snow play and sledding zone registration.

“Caution: Playing in the snow is dangerous. Risks include collisions with natural or man-made objects or other individuals, and natural and man-made walking and sliding surfaces, including but not limited to snow, packed snow and ice. including, but not limited to, injury or death.” Registration description On the Copper Mountain website.

Copper Mountain closes with sunset around 7:12 PM.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office is investigating the teenager’s cause and cause of death. Their identities have not yet been made public.
