New York (AP) —The Tony Awards may be months away, but three groups already have special awards: the Broadway Advocacy Union, “David Byrne’s American Utopia,” and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Freestyle Love Supreme.” Has won the award.

The American Theater Wing and Broadway League announced on Tuesday that the three groups will receive special Tony Awards for works and organizations that do not fall into the competitive category.

Broadway Advocacy Coalition is an art-based advocacy non-profit organization that aims to build the ability of individuals, organizations and communities to use storytelling to dismantle systems that perpetuate racism. Founded in 2016 by Jackie Bell, Amber Iman, Cameron J. Ross, Britton Smith, Adrian Warren and Christian Dante White.

In a statement, the American Theater Wing and Broadway League stated that the coalition “has an unparalleled platform for marginalized members of our theater community and that we all are better when we strive for fairness. We provided a tool to help you do that. ”

Special Tony will also appear in two high-profile shows of the season with a shortened pandemic, “Freestyle Love Supreme” and “David Byrne’s American Utopia.” They did not offer free tickets to Tony’s voters and were not eligible for a competitive award.

“Freestyle Love Supreme” was created by Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale. It features a comedy improvisational music structure and a rotating cast of Broadway performers. Burn’s acclaimed stage show incorporates Talking Heads classics and other songs. Spike Lee made a movie of it for HBO.

Both shows, the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League, “take the theater to the next level and provide ready-to-use presentations that take the theater to the homes of millions of people around the world beyond the stage.” Said.

The Tony Awards are set for September 26th.
