Chicago (CBS)- The suspect has been detained after two people were killed and eight were injured in a downtown shooting on Thursday night.
Police said the shootings took place outside McDonald’s on Chicago Avenue and State Street after 10:40 pm. The McDonald’s window shattered during the shoot.
A total of 10 people were shot dead. Two of the victims died, police said.
Police confirmed that the suspect had been detained and the pistol was recovered from the scene.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued the following statement:
“There was ridiculous violence in Chicago and the province’s territories last night. I was in frequent contact with Brown and his team early in the morning, and President Carter of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). Keep monitoring development all day long.
Local residents and commuters need to be reassured that this busy area is safe. Now is the time to take more concrete and concrete steps to tackle the region.
First, we asked Brown to set up a fixed post for uniformed officers at the intersection of the state and Chicago, and another fixed post at Redline Station in the same area.
Second, I also decided if I needed to work with the business issues and consumer protection departments to take additional steps to address long-standing concerns along that block. The work has already begun.
Finally, I asked the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the CTA to set up a CPD public transport system that patrols stations, platforms, and trains 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Most importantly, once again, another tragedy is simply terrible and unacceptable, simply because the firearms are in the hands of those who do not care about the value of their own or others’ lives. Our police station is working hard to ensure that the person responsible for the incident last night is held accountable for the safety and well-being of all of us. ”
“I literally just got home, and when I stepped into the lobby of the apartment, I saw two girls running,” the witness told CBS2.
