Beijing (AP) — A laboratory explosion at a university in eastern China killed two people and injured at least nine, state media said Monday.

The explosion occurred at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on Sunday afternoon. Nanjing is a major center of higher education that attracts many international students. Authorities were investigating the cause of the explosion at the university’s School of Materials Science and Technology, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The identities of the victims have not been disclosed. The school’s website states that more than 1,000 international students have attended engineering, business, and Chinese courses. However, it was not clear how many people remained after China began imposing a pandemic travel ban.

China has sought to establish itself as a major player in global aviation and spaceflight, although efforts to produce commercial jet airliners have not yet had a significant impact.
