TOKYO (AP) — Toyota said on Monday that it is testing a race car’s hydrogen-burning engine as it works towards using the technology in commercial products.

Such engines, like rockets, burn hydrogen instead of gasoline. Japanese automakers said they could collect data and try to solve problems in the field by testing the technology in race cars.

Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. announced earlier that it is developing a hydrogen combustion engine developed by Ford Motor Company and others. Vehicles equipped with such engines are different from fuel cell vehicles, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles that use hydrogen to generate electricity.

Naoyuki Sakamoto, chief engineer of the hydrogen engine Corolla model, said at an online press conference, “I would like to propose multiple options according to the needs of the region.”

Mr. Sakamoto did not say when the hydrogen combustion engine would be commercialized, but acknowledged that further development was needed to accommodate the limited mileage so far. The infrastructure to fuel these vehicles is another obstacle.

One of the advantages of a hydrogen engine is that it requires minimal adjustment from a regular internal combustion engine, except for the fuel piping and injection system.

There are risks associated with using hydrogen as fuel, but hydrogen stations are operating nationwide and there have been no major accidents so far.

Sakamoto said hydrogen is as safe as other fuels on the road today, the lithium-ion batteries used in EVs caused fires, and hydrogen tanks are made of carbon fiber.

According to Toyota, the latest hydrogen technology has been tested on the Yaris with a 1.6-liter engine for racing.

Two hydrogen tanks fit in the backseat area of ​​a racing car, but are subject to change in commercial models.

Hydrogen has several advantages. Although batteries for EVs require a variety of minerals, hydrogen is relatively abundant in the environment and is easy to store and transport.

Hydrogen can be produced from water by electrolysis, which is common in school chemistry experiments. Hydrogen can also be converted from solar energy for storage. However, depending on how widespread such fuels are, it can be much cheaper to fill a car than gasoline, which can fluctuate in price. Toyota also said it is producing hydrogen at a geothermal power plant in southern Japan.

However, hydrogen engines are not 100% zero emissions and emit a small amount of carbon dioxide from engine oil. Toyota said it has developed a technology to purify nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
