Los Angeles (AP) — The $ 650 million plan will revolutionize the theme park style at the Los Angeles Zoo over the next 20 years.
The city-owned zoo in the city’s Griffith Park area features new attractions such as exhibit upgrades, a 60-foot (18-meter-deep) canyon for rock climbing, and a hilltop building called the California Center. Will be provided. The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that the lodge in Yosemite National Park overlooks a 25,000-square-foot vineyard.
Proponents of the zoo’s “20-year vision plan” said building features would increase zoo attendance by 72% to up to 3 million visitors annually.
However, the construction consumed 23 acres (9.3 hectares) of native forest and sparked opposition led by the historic conservation group Friends of Griffith Park and the California Native Botanical Society.
Zoo officials were thinking about the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics when planning, said Dennis Bellett, zoo director and chief executive officer.
“What are we going to do to attract foreign travelers to the zoo as a place to not miss?” Bellett said.
The next step in the proposal is a review by the Los Angeles City Council’s Arts, Parks, Health, Education, and Neighborhood Commissions.
The zoo relies on $ 11.6 million from the city’s general financial resources to meet its financial budget of approximately $ 25 million from 2021 to 2010.
