new york (WPIX) – A teenager died Monday night while surfing the subway in New York City, police said.

The 15-year-old boy hit his head against a metal beam while riding a subway train over the Williamsburg Bridge around 6:55 p.m., according to the NYPD. A teenage boy identified as Zachary Nazario died at the scene, officials said.

Sources say that as the train was heading to Manhattan, the driver saw a teenager on the tracks under the train and pulled the emergency brake. Subway users reported seeing someone board the train as it exited the Mercy Avenue station, sources said.

“I cannot stress enough how dangerous it is to get on the outside of a train. Our hearts go out to our loved ones at yet another tragic time. Families long to talk to their children about the real dangers of what may seem like a thrill, but are too often fatal.

Last year, the NYPD described surfing on the subway as an “unfortunate trending problem,” partly fueled by social media.

“Riding outside subways is not only illegal, it is incredibly dangerous. Every year we see riders, many of them teenagers, killed or seriously injured participating in so-called subway surfing. To combat this unsafe behavior, we are enforcing rules prohibiting travel between trains,” an NYPD spokesman said in a statement Tuesday.
