Washington (AP) —Wireless carrier T-Mobile has agreed to pay $ 19.5 million in a settlement with the Federal Communications Commission for a 12-hour national outage in June 2020, resulting in a 911 call. Failed thousands of times.

As part of the settlement, the FCC said on Tuesday that T-Mobile promised to improve outage communications to emergency call centers, among other measures.

The agency said there were more than 23,000 “complete failures” of 911 calls due to the outage. Some calls were passed, even though there was no important information such as callback numbers or location data.

According to an FCC investigation, a failure in a part of T-Mobile’s network started the outage and was exacerbated by routing and software errors.

The company in Bellevue, Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This is not the first time such an outage has occurred. T-Mobile paid a $ 17.5 million fine after two related national outages on the same day in August 2014.
