(The Hill) – A woman charged with attacking a Capitol police officer with a flagpole during the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday.
Federal investigators said Audrey Ann Suthered Ramsey had amplified calls for revolution and violence before the riots, including a post on social media calling for “hang the traitors.” She was also caught on video threatening then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) inside the Capitol.
The Justice Department said she yelled at several congressional officers, “Tell Mr Pelosi that’s what you’re here for.” news release. “What happens when there are 100,000 people?”
Prosecutors called Southard Ramsey the “principal agitator” during the riots, claiming she used the flagpole to “violently rampage” against police officers. Prosecutors claimed she was part of a mob leading a mob to the House of Commons.
During the riot, she posted a video on Facebook of herself in front of the Houses of Parliament.
“Standing in front of the Capitol, ready to accept it,” she said in the video. “As soon as we get enough people here. Raiding the Capitol will be fun.”
At Friday’s sentencing, Southard Ramsey was scheduled to read a written statement holding him accountable for his actions. Instead, she put her statement aside and stated a list of complaints, including blaming Antifa for the violence of the insurgency, according to CBS. Court report.
“We are frustrated because they don’t listen to us at the polls,” she said. “They don’t listen to us little humans in the general public.”
The defendant reportedly addressed the judge afterwards.
“If you decide to put me in jail for doing your duty…think what I have to give up now,” she said.
Federal prosecutors initially considered Thazard-Ramsey’s claim of responsibility and sought a six-year prison sentence. But after she filed her complaint against her, prosecutors canceled that recommendation and raised her recommended prison term to about 10 years in prison, according to reports.
Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Sazard Ramsey to six years in prison as originally recommended by the government, plus three years of supervised release and a $2,000 fine.
