Seamless cross-border 5G connectivity for Luxembourg vehicles

Using two Ericsson-equipped 5G networks, POST Luxembourg successfully ran a new 5G trial in Luxembourg. This is part of 5GCroCo, a project aimed at demonstrating uninterrupted connections across vehicle borders.

In this test, htw saar of the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken, Germany, conducted a drive test of hundreds of kilometers and confirmed that the vehicle remained connected to one of the two Ericsson 5G networks. These networks are located in a town on the border between Luxembourg and Germany and are part of the European 5G cross-border corridor between Mets in France, Merzig in Germany and Luxembourg.

Without seamless network handover during the border crossing, no data will be sent for a few minutes and the HD mapping service will have white spots. However, as shown in these tests, vehicles with service continuity enabled can stay connected as if they were moving from network cell to network cell in one country.

Gaston Bohnenberger, Director of POST Technologies, said:

Remi de Montgolfier, General Manager of Ericsson Belgium Luxembourg, said: We are very pleased to work on this project to achieve seamlessly connected mobility between cross-border 5G networks. The 5GCroCo project is the beginning of next-generation mobility development. “

Following this milestone, 5GCroCo partners will offer additional connected and automated mobility (CAM), including warnings regarding expected collaborative collision avoidance (ACCA) use cases and broken vehicles and traffic congestion in remote controlled driving (ToD). Preparing to demonstrate service.

About the 5GCroCo project:

5GCroCo Aims to test 5G technology in a cross-border corridor connecting the cities of Mets-Merzig-Luxembourg, which crosses the borders of France, Germany and Luxembourg. The 5GCroCo project offers the potential for connected and automated mobility (CAM) services as vehicles cross different borders.
