Soul [South Korea], August 25 (ANI / Global Economy): Samsung Electronics plans to work with global companies to expand its line of memory semiconductor products with artificial intelligence (AI) engines.
We plan to continue the “Memory Super Gap” by expanding the memory semiconductor ecosystem through the convergence of memory and system semiconductors.
Samsung Electronics unveiled a variety of product lines and application cases that apply PIM (Processing-in-Memory) technology to DRAM memory processes at an online “hot chip” conference on August 24th.
PIM is a next-generation convergence technology that incorporates the system semiconductor processor function required for calculation calculations in memory.
Previously, Samsung Electronics developed the world’s first “HBM-PIM”. It applied AI to HBM2 (High Bandwidth Memory) and Aquabolt used HPC (High Performance Computing) and high-speed data analysis.
At the conference, Samsung Electronics introduced “AXDIMM (Acceleration DIMM)”, which applies an AI engine to a DRAM module, “LPDDR5-PIM” technology, which combines PIM and mobile DRAM, and a system application case.
AXDIMM is a product that extends PIM technology from chip to module, with an AI engine in the DRAM module.
An AI engine is installed in each rank, which is the operating unit of the DRAM module, and performance has been improved by maximizing parallel processing.
The AI engine can also operate within the DRAM module, reducing data transfer between the CPU and the DRAM module, thus increasing the energy efficiency of the AI accelerator system.
