Armed group shoots dead Sikh man in northwestern Pakistan, police announce | Wagon Radio 720

Peshawar, Pakistan (AP) – Police said on Sunday gunmen shot dead a member of Pakistan’s minority Sikh community in an overnight raid in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Local police officer Gohar Khan said the attack on Manmohan Singh, 35, appeared to be a targeted killing. Khan said police are continuing to investigate a motive.

Khan said the attackers opened fire on Singh as he was on his way home from the suburbs. The attackers fled the scene.

This is the third attack on members of the Sikh community in Pakistan this year. Last month, gunmen shot dead Sardar Singh in the eastern city of Lahore after shooting from a vehicle. In April, militants shot dead Dayal Singh in Peshawar. In May 2022, gunmen killed two members of the Sikh community in the same city.

Most Sikhs emigrated to neighboring India in 1947. The year marked the end of British rule over the subcontinent and the establishment of Pakistan as the Muslim homeland of the region. Thousands of Sikhs remain in Pakistan and usually live in peace. However, isolated attacks against members of the Sikh, Christian and Ahmadi minorities continue.
