Rio de Janeiro-Rio de Janeiro canceled the New Year’s Eve party on Saturday as the horror of COVID-19 renewed.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes announced the decision on social media.
Paes has promised the biggest New Year’s Eve party to date, with multiple fireworks festivals and artists performing on 12 stages in the city. He said there were no decisions about the carnival to take place in March.
The annual celebration at Copacabana Beach has attracted more than a million locals and tourists in the past.
Other Brazilian cities, including São Paulo and Salvador, have also canceled New Year’s Eve celebrations for fear of a variant of Omicron. So far, the Ministry of Health has identified five cases of Omicron in Brazil.
