How to protect your personal information when disposing of old mobile phones and computers

Chicago (WLS) — Do you want to get rid of your old electronics? Use these helpful tips to keep your personal and private information out of the hands of strangers. Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

Always protect stored personal information.

Remove all memory cards and SIM cards that may contain data or personal photos.

Completely wipe your old computer’s hard drive by deleting all data. But before that, you should backup and save your information and hard drive to a new device or external storage.

Restore your device and smartphone to factory settings. it will delete the data.

If you can’t donate a device, the Attorney General’s Office encourages people to use the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s information. List of electronic recyclers Find local drop off locations or schedule a pickup.
