Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin signaled lawmakers Thursday to support the stripping of authorities’ commanders to determine whether troops accused of sexual assault should be prosecuted. NBC News reports.
A shift that puts such decisions in the hands of independent legal authorities will make a big difference in how the military handles sexual assault cases.
According to defense officials, Austin will make his nomination to President Joe Biden in the coming weeks.
“As I said earlier, what we are doing is not working and needs to be fixed,” Austin said in a Senate Military Commission testimony.
