Foxborough, Massachusetts (AP) — The New England Patriots are releasing Stephon Gilmore in the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year as they were unable to sign a new contract.

The four Pro Bowl cornerbacks confirmed his departure on an Instagram post and said he would never forget the moment he shared with his teammates on and off the field over the last four seasons, including winning the Super Bowl following the 2018 season. Said. “

“Saying goodbye to this wonderful fan base is fraught with emotions,” Gilmour wrote. “We have had a lot of success together. You have incredibly inspired my personal achievements.”

Gilmour started the season on a physically infeasible list after returning from a quadriceps injury late last season that required off-season surgery. He would have been eligible to start practicing again after the sixth week.

The Patriots and Gilmour have been trying to carry out restructured deals since this summer. The 31-year-old is a voluntary part of New England’s off-season program in May and June in an attempt to earn additional compensation as he enters the final season of the five-year $ 65 million contract signed in 2017. And participated in both the mandatory part.

He was due to pay a base salary of $ 7 million this season. He also received a $ 500,000 roster bonus, but even then, his 2021 rewards would have ranked him 25th in the NFL cornerback.

It has been incompatible with New England’s secondary and outstanding Gilmour since arriving as a free agent from Buffalo in 2017. He has made 11 interceptions with the Patriots in four seasons.

Gilmour kept his career low with a single passcut last season. He played in just 11 games after missing time due to a COVID-19 diagnosis and a quad injury.

He told ESPN this summer that he only wanted fair value and felt good after surgery.

“I just want something worth it, but it works,” Gilmour told ESPN. “All players should be paid for what they deserve. That’s exactly what it is.”

Despite Patrick Chan’s retirement and loss of security, the Patriots have done a few things to strengthen their secondary this offseason. Defensive back JC Jackson, who led the team in nine passcuts last season, resigned and the team added veteran Jalen Mills. Jackson has already made two passcuts this season.

Gilmour’s long absence would have hampered his ability to build chemistry with units that added some new pieces to the free agent’s defensive line, such as Davongojo of the defensive tackle and Matt Judon of the edge rusher.

Now that Gilmour is gone, the Patriots are committed to strengthening their fourth-place defense in the NFL, allowing them to pass 185 yards per game.
