Oregon High School seniors raise money for art programs by showing off their local talents

Oregon, Illinois (WTVO) — The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced many local students, including dance, sporting events, and show cancellations.

I had the opportunity to talk to two seniors who immediately thought about creating their own music and art festival to showcase the work of a local artist.

Two seniors at Oregon High School, Claire Lebash and Whitney Kirk, explain:

As seniors, Labash and Kirk have to do a special project before graduating, but the pandemic has canceled the original plan.

“Music has always been my big passion. Claire loved it and a lot of things were canceled in the choir. I know it’s difficult, so I have to stand eight feet away,” they said. explained.

“I had to do a senior capstone project this year and initially planned to go on a different route, but it didn’t work, so both were involved in music and missed various opportunities for covid. I noticed, and something like that. “

They had to think quickly on their own and decided to create their own art and music festival featuring the work of students and locals.

Oregon graduate and artist Gillian Higgins said: “It gives me the opportunity to showcase works that I couldn’t show up in the contest to confirm that Claire and Whitney launched this project.”

Higgins says the pandemic has canceled the opportunity to show off her work. But this time she can.

“So I did this as a homage to Walt Disney. My dream is to become a Disney storyboard artist someday,” Higgins said.

Overall, students were able to showcase the art of 16 artists and eight musicians were able to play music throughout the day.

“It was a daunting task, but I’m happy to give these people the opportunity to share their talents and passions,” they concluded.

Students say that all donations collected from the Arts Festival on Sunday will be used to fund the Oregon High School arts program.
