Things to watch out for in the 7th week of the Big 12 Conference:
This week’s game
No.25 Texas No.12 Oklahoma. The Cowboys are 5-0 for the first time since 2015 and have the chance to win three consecutive games with the top 25 teams for the first time in program history. Oklahoma won a double-digit win over the teams ranked in the first two big 12 games before the opening day last week. Texas (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) has overcome the 28-7 deficit since the first quarter and has lost 55-48 to fourth-placed Oklahoma, who remained undefeated. Cowboys and Longhorns are running back in games that average over 100 yards. Second-year Texas Vijan Robinson leads the league with eight rushing TDs at 132.3 yards per game. Senior Jalen Warren of Oklahoma State University averages 102.4 yards per game.
The best matchup
Baylor and former BYU attack coordinator Jeff Grimes face 19th Cougar. This preview of the upcoming Big 12 matchup also includes some reunions. Grimes and Offensive Line Coach Eric Mateos are the first season in Baylor after coming from BYU. Bears’ second-year head coach, Dave Aranda, was a defensive coordinator in South Utah in 2008, when BYU’s assistant head coach Edrum was Thunderbird’s head coach. Aranda was a Utah staff member in 2012, along with current BYU defensive coordinator Eliza Tuiaki. BYU accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 last month and will begin conference play in 2023.
In the numbers
Oklahoma in 4th place has the longest active streak in the country in 14 games. However, the last four games of Sooners and five of the six games of the season were decided below the touchdown. … The TCU playing in Oklahoma has won five of the last 11 games against the top five ranked teams. … Before Iowa State University Byweek, Brockpardy became the first player in school history, the sixth in Big 12 history, and over 10,000 yards in his career. … Cyclone RB Breece Hall has a TD in a hurry in 17 consecutive games with big 12 records. … In this season’s non-conference games, the Big 12 is 23-6 (.793 wins). … Texas Tech (4-2) plays seven unranked opponents in a row. This is the longest season opener since 2008.
It seems very unlikely that Texas Tech will be the first team to lose on a series of trips to Kansas since 2008. Two years ago, the Red Raiders lost again as Saturday as their homecoming opponent in Lawrence. However, the Jayhawks (1-4, 0-2) outperformed 104-14 in the two big 12 games this season. Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2) scored an average of 33 points in two league losses. According to the FanDuel Sportsbook, the Jayhawks are 16 1/2 points underdogs.
Kansas State Junior’s Malik Knowles has returned a touchdown kick-off in each of the last two games and is one of the country’s leading returners with 39.3 yards per return. Wildcats’ 57 punts or kickoffs returned to TD since 2005 are 20 more than any other FBS team.
