Researchers have explained that the traditional way to assess coexistence is to sample virtually all possible configurations and monitor the resulting performance of both systems. However, the new NIST method involves a series of experiments in which the transmit configuration is selected based on a small set of previously collected coexistence data.
Researchers used data from previous laboratory experiments to simulate the experiment 50 times. An average of about 8 measurements were required to identify at least 95% of the composition and successfully share the spectrum. This is about 33% less than traditional tests for all configurations that require about 12 measurements.
