New York Governor Kathy Hokul took over the sudden notice of her predecessor, who was plagued by a scandal in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic, and began her term on Tuesday with sufficient challenges to the new administration.
She also started with a historic opportunity. Hochul was the first woman to serve as one of the most prominent governors in the United States.
Debbie Walsh, director of the American Center for Women’s Political Science at Rutgers University, said:
“And unfortunately, even in 2021, women are still effectively seen as newcomers,” she said.
Democratic Hochul is now the ninth woman to serve as governor. It was set in 2004 and connects the records consistent with 2007 and 2019, but it’s still pretty shy about gender proportions.
Even now, a century after women won the right to vote, 19 states have never been led by women. This includes some of the most populous states, including California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Even if it succeeds, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s call election next month seems unlikely to promote women to the state’s best jobs.
Hawkul was Lieutenant Governor of New York until he replaced Democrat Andrew Cuomo, who resigned after a ten-year term. Cuomo faced the possibility of impeachment after stating that he had sexually harassed or made improper contact with 11 women, according to an Attorney General’s investigation. In particular, Cuomo faced a legislative investigation last year to see if he misunderstood the death of COVID-19 in a nursing home.
