The Illinois Commerce Commission said Monday that 464 area codes overlap with 708 area codes. According to the panel, the 464 area code will only be available if all assignable prefixes in the 708 code have been exhausted. It is not expected to happen until January.
The 708 area code serves most of Cook County’s western and southern regions and Will County’s eastern and southern regions, including Alsip, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Lansing, and Oak Lawn.
The overlay adds an additional area code to the same geographic area as the existing area code, and all current phone customers retain the original area code. According to the committee, 464 area codes will be assigned to new customers requesting local phone service, mobile and pager services, and alarms.
Customers in the current 708 region retain their numbers. According to the committee, consumers looking for additional phone lines will be able to continue to receive 708 phone numbers in most cases, even after 464 area codes have been used.
Local calls will continue to be local calls.
