Watch: FDNY saves woman hanging from burning Manhattan skyscraper

Midtown, Manhattan (PIX11)—A A fire broke out in a Manhattan skyscraper A video shows members of the New York City Fire Department rescuing a woman from a burning building on Saturday morning.

A group of four firefighters suspended 20 stories in the air with ropes, saving two lives. At the same time, other firefighters rescued dozens more people from the blaze.

This is the so-called high-rise rescue. Patti Ryan filmed on her cell phone as FDNY climbed onto a rope and freed a woman hanging from a window on the 20th floor.

The woman who shot the video, Patti Ryan, tweeted: Woman rescued in devastating proper fire by #NYBRAVEST #FDNY. Trying to escape her smoke, she slipped and she was hanging from the 15th floor to her 20th floor. Thank you to our heroes!!!!”

The victim hanging outside the window was caught in the child gate. Firefighter Arthur Podgorski was brought down to grab the woman.

“My role was to get under the victim, weigh her, support her weight, and allow the members above her to release her arm,” Podgorski said. “When moments like this happen, there is no room for error. We have to work together.”

Rescue teams conduct weekly drills, but firefighters rarely need to perform this operation.

“Since 1980, the NYC Fire Department has documented more than 50 successful life-saving evolutions,” said Fire Chief Frank Reeve.

More than 38 people, including Gillian Mitchell and her boyfriend, were injured in some way but were able to escape, but needed oxygen once they hit the ground.

“When I opened the front door, it was really thick with smoke everywhere,” Mitchell told PIX11 News. “They recommended going to the roof, but we said, no, let’s try another stairwell. It was the first and only time in my life when we were in the smoke.” I felt that we were not going to succeed.

Gillian has been preparing for the NYC Marathon for eight months, and despite the fires, she still intends to run it now that she has a better understanding of how quickly life can change.
