Mayor of Portage, James Snyder, will be sentenced to 21 months in prison for bribes and tax evasion

Hammond, Indiana-A former mayor of northwestern Indiana received a $ 13,000 bribe from a trucking company, was convicted of illegal tax evasion, and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

A federal judge ruled former Portage Mayor James Snyder on Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of seeking a bribe in return for manipulating a city contract of about $ 1.1 million with the company.

Republican Snyder maintained his innocence during his trial, testifying that the money was a payment for the consulting services declared in his income tax return.

Snyder was first elected mayor in 2011 and was dismissed in 2019.
